Signer Identification & Satisfactory Evidence
Ohio requires the notary to identify the signer by personal knowledge or satisfactory evidence and to ensure personal appearance.
Satisfactory evidence
An Ohio notary identifies the signer through personal knowledge or satisfactory evidence—typically a current government-issued photo ID, or the oath of a credible witness who knows the signer and is known to or identified to the notary. The signer must personally appear before the notary at the time of the act.
Refusal for doubt or duress
If the notary cannot confirm identity, doubts the signer's competence, or believes the signing is not voluntary or is fraudulent, the notary must refuse. Valid ID does not cure a lack of willingness or awareness. Refusing in these situations is a duty, not merely an option.
