How we write & review our questions
Our editorial and review process — so you can trust that what you study is accurate, original, and current.
How questions are authored
Every practice question and study chapter on PrepPass is written from scratch by our editorial team, working directly from primary sources — never copied or paraphrased from a real exam.
- Written from public-domain statutes and regulations — for example, the California Business & Professions Code for CSLB contractor exams, and the equivalent code or rulebook for every other exam we cover.
- Built to each board's official exam blueprint, so the mix of questions matches the topic weighting the real test uses.
- Original wording only. Real exam questions are copyrighted; we deliberately do not use them. Our questions teach the same underlying rule in our own words.
- Each question is tied to the specific rule it tests, so the explanation can cite the law rather than an opinion.
How questions are reviewed
Nothing is published on a single person's say-so. Every item goes through review before and after it goes live:
- Editorial review — a second set of eyes checks each question against the current published rule and the official source before it ships.
- Corrections loop — every page links to our feedback form. When a reader flags an error, we re-check it against the source and correct it, usually within a few business days.
- Re-verification on rule changes — when a board updates fees, thresholds, or procedures, we re-check the affected questions against the new source.
Where a vertical calls for licensed judgment, it is reviewed by a licensed professional. Our real-estate and insurance content is reviewed by John Zhang, a licensed California real-estate and insurance agent (CA license #: to be published). This line will show his license number once it is provided, so you can verify it directly with the state.
Who stands behind this
PrepPass is built and maintained by Sen Lin, its founder. Accountability for the content rests with a real, named person you can look up — not an anonymous brand.
Not affiliated with any licensing board
PrepPass is an independent study resource. We are not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by the California Contractors State License Board (CSLB), the California Board of Barbering and Cosmetology (BBC), the California Department of Insurance (CDI), PSI Services, or any other licensing authority. Always verify current fees, deadlines, and procedures with the official board before you rely on them.
Found an error? Tell us
Accuracy is a moving target and readers catch things we miss. If a question, answer, or explanation looks wrong, report it and we will re-check it against the source. You can also email support@preppass.org.
