Idaho Real Estate License Law for Brokers
Idaho real estate practice is governed by the Idaho Real Estate License Law (Idaho Code Title 54, Chapter 20) and the IREC Rules, administered by the Idaho Real Estate Commission. This chapter covers the licensing authority, the designated broker's role, and the higher broker requirements.
The Idaho Real Estate Commission
The Idaho Real Estate Commission (IREC) licenses and regulates brokers and salespersons, investigates complaints, and enforces the license law and rules. Anyone performing licensed real estate activity for compensation must be licensed unless specifically exempt. A private trade association has no licensing power.
The Designated Broker
Each licensed brokerage entity in Idaho must have a designated broker who is responsible for the firm's licensed activity, the supervision of affiliated licensees, and the proper handling of the trust account. The designated broker is accountable to IREC for the firm's compliance, making this role central to the broker exam.
Broker Qualification and Renewal
The Idaho broker license is a higher tier that requires additional broker-level education and qualifying experience beyond the salesperson requirements, plus passing the broker exam. To keep a license active, brokers must complete IREC-approved continuing education and renew before expiration. Re-examination is not required at renewal.
