Kansas Real Estate License Law for Brokers
Kansas real estate practice is governed by the Real Estate Brokers' and Salespersons' License Act (K.S.A. 58-30) and administered by the Kansas Real Estate Commission (KREC). This chapter covers the licensing authority and the broker, associate-broker, and supervising-broker roles.
The Kansas Real Estate Commission
KREC licenses and regulates brokers and salespersons under the license act, investigates complaints, and enforces the statute and rules. Anyone performing licensed real estate activity for compensation must be licensed unless specifically exempt. A trade association has no licensing authority.
Supervising Broker and Associate Broker
A supervising broker is responsible for supervising the associate brokers and salespersons and for the trust accounts at a particular office or branch. An associate broker has met broker qualifications but works under and is supervised by another broker rather than running the firm. Understanding these roles is central to the broker exam.
Licensing and Compliance
Kansas broker licensure is a higher tier reached through qualifying experience and education plus passing the broker exam. Licensees renew on the required cycle and complete continuing education. KREC may discipline a broker for violations such as commingling trust funds or failing to supervise affiliated licensees.
