Oklahoma Real Estate License Code

Oklahoma real estate practice is governed by the Oklahoma Real Estate License Code and Rules, administered by the Oklahoma Real Estate Commission (OREC). This chapter covers the regulator, the license ladder, and advertising standards.

OREC and the License Code

The Oklahoma Real Estate Commission administers the License Code and Rules, issuing and disciplining licenses and setting education and examination requirements. Anyone who, for compensation, sells, leases, or negotiates real estate for others must be licensed unless exempt. OREC investigates complaints and can impose discipline for conduct that violates the Code.

The License Ladder

Oklahoma licenses advance from provisional sales associate to sales associate, then broker associate, and finally broker. Each tier requires additional education and experience. Only the broker tier carries independent authority to operate a firm, supervise associates, and maintain the trust account, which is why the broker exam adds management and trust content.

Advertising Standards

Advertising by a licensee must be truthful and not misleading and must associate the licensee's activity with the responsible brokerage rather than appear to be independent. Blind or deceptive advertising violates the Code. The broker is responsible for advertising conducted under the firm and should have policies to keep associates compliant.
