Building a Respectful Workplace

Beyond defining harassment, ServSafe Workplace uses scenario-based learning to emphasize the human impact of harassment and each employee's shared responsibility for a respectful, inclusive culture.

Everyone's Responsibility

A respectful workplace is everyone's job. Each employee is expected to treat coworkers professionally, to adjust their behavior when conduct is unwelcome, and to speak up when they experience or witness harassment — not only when a manager is watching and not only when the conduct targets them personally.

Why Impact Matters, Not Just Rules

The course centers the impact of harassment because it is more persuasive than a list of rules. Harassment harms individuals' well-being and dignity, and it also hurts the business through turnover, low morale, reduced productivity, reputation damage, and potential liability. Understanding that impact motivates staff to protect a respectful culture.

Reading Signals and Stopping Conduct

A polite or nervous laugh is not consent — people often mask discomfort to avoid conflict with coworkers they must keep working beside. The respectful response to signs of discomfort is to stop personal or sexual comments entirely. "That's just kitchen culture" is not a valid excuse for conduct that makes coworkers uncomfortable.
