Chapter 4 of 1520% of exam

Iowa Broker Qualification and Experience

The Iowa broker license is a higher tier reached through experience and additional education. This chapter covers the experience requirement and why it exists.

The 24-Month Experience Requirement

To qualify for an Iowa broker license, a salesperson generally must have been actively licensed for at least 24 months and completed the required broker prelicense education (60 hours), then pass the broker exam. Attorney status or trade-association membership does not substitute for this experience and education.

Why Experience Matters

The broker tier carries responsibility for supervising affiliated licensees, maintaining the trust account, and ensuring firm compliance with license law. The experience requirement helps ensure a broker has practical background before taking on these duties. Brokers still complete continuing education and follow agency-disclosure rules.
