Broker Qualification & Experience

To qualify for an Iowa broker license, a salesperson generally must have been:

  • a.Licensed for at least 10 years continuously
  • b.An actively licensed salesperson for at least 24 months and completed the required broker prelicense education
  • c.A member of a national trade association for 5 years
  • d.A licensed attorney in Iowa

Iowa's broker license requires qualifying experience—generally at least 24 months of active salesperson licensure—plus completion of the required broker prelicense education (60 hours) and passing the broker exam. This experience and education gate reflects the broker's added supervisory and trust-handling duties. Attorney status or association membership does not substitute for it.

Broker Qualification & Experience

The main reason Iowa imposes an experience requirement before granting a broker license is that a broker:

  • a.Supervises other licensees and is responsible for trust funds and firm compliance
  • b.Is exempt from continuing education
  • c.Sets statewide commission rates
  • d.No longer needs to disclose agency relationships

The broker tier carries responsibility for supervising affiliated licensees, maintaining the trust account, and ensuring the firm complies with license law. The experience requirement helps ensure a broker has practical background before assuming these duties. Brokers still complete continuing education and follow agency-disclosure rules, and the state does not set commission rates.
