Rules of the Road & Right-of-Way
Right-of-way rules decide who goes first so traffic moves safely and predictably. They cover intersections, turns, emergency vehicles, and yielding.
Yielding at intersections
At an uncontrolled intersection, yield to the vehicle that arrives first; if two arrive together, the driver on the left yields to the driver on the right. At a four-way stop, the first to stop goes first.
Turns and pedestrians
A driver turning left must yield to oncoming traffic and to pedestrians in the crosswalk. Always yield to pedestrians and to traffic already in a roundabout before you enter.
Emergency vehicles and Move Over
Pull to the right and stop for an approaching emergency vehicle using lights and siren. Alabama's Move Over law also requires you to change lanes away from a stopped emergency, police, or tow vehicle when safe, or slow down when you cannot. (Alabama Driver Manual)
