Safe Driving & Sharing the Road
Safe, defensive driving means managing space and speed and sharing the road with motorcycles, trucks, buses, bicyclists, and pedestrians.
Following distance and space
Keep at least a three-to-four-second following gap in good conditions and increase it on wet, icy, or crowded roads. Space gives you time to see and react to hazards.
Motorcycles, trucks, and buses
Give motorcycles a full lane and extra room. Large trucks have wide blind spots, so avoid lingering beside them. Stop for a school bus with flashing red lights; on an undivided road, traffic in both directions must stop.
Bicyclists and pedestrians
Pass bicyclists with plenty of clearance and check for them before turning or opening a door. Yield to pedestrians in crosswalks and be especially alert in school and residential zones.
