Traffic signs and signals are grouped by shape and color so you can read them at a glance. Knowing what each requires helps you react in time and answer these questions with confidence.
Shapes and colors carry meaning
A red octagon means STOP and a downward triangle means YIELD. Yellow diamonds warn of hazards ahead, orange diamonds mark construction or work zones, and a five-sided pentagon marks a school zone. A round sign with an X and RR warns of a railroad crossing.
Regulatory vs. warning colors
White signs with black lettering are regulatory and state laws you must obey, such as the speed limit. Yellow and orange signs warn or advise. Blue signs show motorist services and green signs give directions and distances.
Traffic signals
A steady red means stop and stay stopped; a steady yellow means the light is about to turn red, so prepare to stop. A flashing red works like a STOP sign, and a flashing yellow means slow down and proceed with caution.
