Impaired Driving & Alberta GDL / Demerits
Impairment law, the GDL stages and the demerit system apply strictly to new drivers.
Impaired driving
Driving at or over 0.08 blood-alcohol is a criminal offence, and Alberta imposes provincial roadside sanctions from 0.05. Cannabis and other drugs also impair driving and carry penalties.
GDL zero tolerance
Learner (Class 7) and probationary (Class 5-GDL) drivers must have a zero blood-alcohol level whenever they drive. A Class 7 learner needs a fully licensed supervisor 18 or older beside them and cannot drive between midnight and 5 a.m.
Demerit points
GDL drivers are suspended at 8 demerit points, while fully licensed drivers are suspended at 15. Both the learner and probationary stages have minimum durations before you can move up.
