Traffic Signs & Signals

Signs, lights and markings communicate the rules and warn of hazards ahead.

Sign shapes

A red octagon is a STOP sign and always means a full stop. Yellow diamond-shaped signs warn of hazards or changing conditions, while white regulatory signs, such as speed limits, state rules you must obey.

Traffic lights

A flashing red light means stop, then go when safe. In Alberta a flashing green ('advance green') light means oncoming traffic is held at a red, so you may turn left or proceed safely.

Road markings

Yellow lines separate opposing traffic; a broken yellow line means you may pass when it is safe, while a solid yellow line means passing is not permitted. White lines separate lanes going the same way.
