Signs & Signals

Arizona traffic signs are grouped by shape and color so you can recognize them quickly. Knowing what each one requires helps you react in time and answer these questions with confidence.

Shapes tell the message

A red octagon means STOP and a downward triangle means YIELD. Yellow diamond signs warn of hazards or changes ahead, while a round sign marked with an X and RR warns of a railroad crossing.

Regulatory vs. advisory speed

White signs with black letters are regulatory and show the legal maximum speed you must obey. Orange signs with black letters show a recommended safe speed for a curve, grade, or special condition.

Traffic signals

A steady red means stop and remain stopped. A flashing red light has the same meaning as a STOP sign: stop completely, then proceed when it is safe. A flashing yellow means slow down and proceed with caution.
