Speed & Road Conditions
Speed must always match conditions. This section covers the basic speed law and how to adjust for rain, fog, work zones, and other hazards.
The basic speed law
You must never drive faster than is reasonable and prudent for the conditions, even when that is slower than the posted limit. Posted limits are maximums for ideal conditions.
Rain, fog, and ice
Slow down on wet roads to avoid hydroplaning, and use low beams in fog. Bridges and overpasses ice first, so ease off the gas and avoid sudden steering or braking on slick surfaces.
Work zones and reduced-speed areas
Obey posted work-zone and school-zone speed limits, merge early, and watch for workers, children, and equipment. Fines are often increased in these areas.
