Choosing a safe speed and keeping a safe gap give you time to react.
Speed limits in NSW
Unless signs say otherwise, the default limit in a built-up area is 50 km/h, and on rural roads it is generally 100 km/h. Always drive to the conditions, which may mean going slower than the limit.
The 3-second gap
Keep at least a three-second gap to the vehicle in front in good conditions, and increase it in rain, fog or on slippery roads. This gives you time to stop if the vehicle ahead brakes suddenly.
Buses and school zones
In a school zone the limit (during signed times) is 40 km/h. You must not exceed 40 km/h when passing a bus that is displaying flashing lights, as children may be nearby.
