Intoxication Signs and Assessment
How to recognise when a patron is becoming intoxicated and the factors that affect how alcohol affects different people.
Signs of intoxication
Common signs include slurred speech, unsteadiness and loss of coordination, glassy or bloodshot eyes, and behaviour changes such as becoming loud, argumentative or overly friendly.
Assessing a patron
Staff observe changes in speech, balance, coordination and behaviour, and look at the overall pattern over time. No single sign is conclusive, so consider the whole picture.
Factors that affect intoxication
How quickly alcohol affects someone depends on body size and weight, sex, whether they have eaten, how fast they drink, and any medications or other drugs. This is why the same drinks affect people differently.
