Hazards and risks
A hazard is anything with the potential to cause harm; the risk is the likelihood and severity of that harm. Identifying hazards is the first step to keeping a site safe.
The risk-management process
Identify the hazard, assess the risk, control the risk, and review the controls. Reviewing keeps controls effective as the work and site conditions change.
The hierarchy of control
Control risks in order of effectiveness: eliminate, substitute, isolate, use engineering controls, then administrative controls, and finally PPE. PPE is the least effective control because it only protects the individual and must be worn correctly.
