Part C: Code Book Application
Part C is the open-book exam in which the candidate applies a specified welding code, such as a structural steel code, to answer questions. It tests the ability to navigate the document, locate the governing requirement, and apply acceptance criteria and procedure-qualification concepts correctly. The skill being measured is efficient, accurate use of the code rather than memorization.
Navigating the Code Efficiently
Because Part C is open-book, the decisive skill is finding the right clause, table, or figure quickly using the table of contents and index. Candidates should understand how the code is organized into sections and how definitions, requirements, and acceptance criteria are grouped. Practicing look-ups builds the speed needed to answer under time pressure. Guessing from general experience risks missing code-specific values that differ from field habits.
Acceptance Criteria and Loading Conditions
Codes define acceptance criteria that depend on the weld type and how the connection is loaded. Statically loaded and cyclically loaded (fatigue) members often have different criteria because cyclic loading makes members more sensitive to stress risers like undercut and sharp weld toes. The inspector must first identify the correct weld type and loading condition, then apply the matching criteria. Grabbing the first number seen, without confirming context, is a common and avoidable mistake.
WPS, PQR, and Welder Qualification
A Welding Procedure Specification (WPS) is the written, qualified procedure that directs the welder on essential variables such as process, filler metal, joint design, preheat, and current. A Procedure Qualification Record (PQR) documents the actual variables used on a test coupon and the mechanical test results that prove the procedure produces sound welds, thereby supporting the WPS. In short, the PQR proves it works and the WPS tells the welder how to repeat it. Welder qualification records, in turn, show that individual welders can follow the WPS.
Using Definitions and Terminology
Welding codes include a definitions section because terms often carry precise technical meanings that differ from everyday usage and that determine which requirement applies. When a question hinges on a defined term, the inspector should confirm the code's own definition rather than assume a casual meaning or borrow a term from another standard. Precise reading of terminology prevents misapplying clauses and choosing the wrong acceptance criteria. This careful, definition-based reading is a hallmark of competent code application.
