Impairment law and the GLP restrictions protect new and other drivers.
Impaired driving
It is a criminal offence to drive at or over 0.08 blood-alcohol, and B.C. imposes immediate roadside prohibitions in the 0.05–0.08 'warn' range. Drugs, including cannabis, also impair driving and carry penalties.
Zero tolerance for new drivers
Drivers in the Learner (L) and Novice (N) stages must have a zero blood-alcohol and drug level whenever they drive. Any alcohol can lead to a prohibition and restart of the stage.
GLP stages
In the L stage you must be supervised by a driver 25 or older with a full licence and cannot drive from midnight to 5 a.m. In the N stage you may drive alone but may carry only one passenger unless a supervisor is present or the passengers are immediate family.
