Road Signs & Signals
Signs, lights and road markings tell you what you must do and warn of what lies ahead.
Sign shapes and colours
A red octagon is always a STOP sign, requiring a full stop. Yellow diamond-shaped signs warn you of hazards or changing conditions ahead, while white regulatory signs (such as speed limits) state rules you must obey.
Traffic lights
A flashing red light means stop, then proceed when safe, like a stop sign. In British Columbia a flashing green light marks a pedestrian-controlled intersection, so treat it as a normal green and watch for people crossing.
Pavement markings
Yellow lines separate traffic moving in opposite directions; a double solid yellow line must not be crossed to pass. White lines separate lanes travelling in the same direction.
