Following distance
Use the three-second rule: if you pass a fixed point less than three seconds after the vehicle ahead, you are too close. Add more seconds in rain, fog, or when following motorcycles and large trucks.
Bicyclists and pedestrians
California's Three Feet for Safety Act requires at least three feet of clearance when passing a bicyclist. Yield to pedestrians in marked and unmarked crosswalks.
Emergency vehicles and school buses
When an emergency vehicle approaches with siren and lights, pull to the right edge of the road and stop until it passes. Stop for a school bus with flashing red lights and an extended stop arm, and wait until the lights stop flashing.
