Traffic Signs & Signals
Signs, lights, and pavement markings tell you the rules and warn of hazards on California roads.
Sign shapes and colors
A red octagon means STOP and always requires a full stop. A downward-pointing triangle means YIELD. Yellow diamond-shaped signs warn of hazards ahead, while white regulatory signs, such as speed limits, state rules you must obey.
Traffic signals
A steady red means stop; a steady yellow warns the light is about to turn red. A flashing red light is treated like a stop sign, and a flashing yellow means slow down and proceed with caution.
Pavement markings
Yellow lines separate traffic moving in opposite directions. Double solid yellow lines mark a no-passing zone. White lines separate lanes traveling the same way, and a broken white line may be crossed to change lanes when safe.
