Speed & Conditions
Legal speed depends on posted limits and on conditions; the basic speed law always applies.
Basic speed law
Never drive faster than is safe for current traffic, road, weather, and visibility conditions, even when that is below the posted limit. Speed should let you stop safely within the distance you can see.
Common posted limits
Unless signs say otherwise, the limit is 25 mph in business and residential districts and in school zones when children are present, and 15 mph in alleys, at blind intersections, and near uncontrolled railroad crossings.
Adjusting for conditions
Slow down for rain, fog, ice, gravel, or heavy traffic. On wet roads reduce speed to avoid hydroplaning, and increase your following distance.
