Patient care is the single largest domain on the CCMA exam and covers everything you do in the exam room: measuring vital signs, collecting a history, positioning and draping, moving patients safely, and caring for wounds. Learn the normal adult ranges cold, because most questions ask whether a value or a technique falls inside or outside them.
Clinical Procedures: Injections, EKG, Phlebotomy, and Instrument Processing
This domain covers the hands-on procedures a medical assistant performs every day, from giving an intramuscular injection to running a twelve-lead EKG and drawing a full tube set in the correct order. Angles, gauges, lead positions, and tube sequences are memorization-heavy, so build a mental table for each one.
Administrative and Legal Practice: HIPAA, Scope, Documentation, and Billing
This domain tests the rules that keep a medical office lawful and functional: patient privacy, the limits of your own scope of practice, consent, accurate charting, scheduling, and the basics of insurance and coding. Most questions here are about what you may do, what you must do, and what you must never do.
Infection Control and Workplace Safety
Infection control questions reward exact sequences: the order you put PPE on, the order you take it off, which precaution matches which organism, and what belongs in a red bag versus regular trash. Everything in this domain rests on two pillars, the CDC infection control guidance and the OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens Standard.
Pharmacology: Drug Classes, Routes, Calculations, and Vaccines
Pharmacology on the CCMA exam is practical rather than theoretical: recognize what a drug class does, know how each route works, calculate a dose correctly, spot an adverse reaction, and follow the rules for controlled substances and vaccines. Drug name endings are your fastest route to identifying a class you have never seen before.
