Coupling and Uncoupling Combination Vehicles

Knowing how to couple and uncouple correctly is basic to safely operating a combination vehicle. Wrong coupling and uncoupling can be very dangerous, leading to a dropped trailer or a separation on the road. This chapter walks through the fifth wheel, kingpin, landing gear, and air line connections, and the exact sequence to connect and disconnect a tractor and trailer safely.

Preparing to Couple

Before backing under a trailer you must position the tractor correctly and prepare both units. Line the tractor straight in front of the trailer, never approaching at an angle, and check the area for people and obstacles. Prepare the fifth wheel and confirm the trailer is at the right height so the coupling seats properly.

Line up straight
Position the tractor directly in front of the trailer; backing under at an angle can push the trailer sideways and break the landing gear.
Set the trailer height
The trailer should be low enough that it is raised slightly when the tractor backs under it; too low damages the nose, too high misses the fifth wheel.
Tilt and open the fifth wheel
Tilt the fifth wheel down toward the rear of the tractor and make sure the locking jaws are open before backing under.
Grease the fifth wheel
Confirm the fifth wheel plate is properly lubricated to reduce friction and prevent hard, jerky steering during turns.
Secure the trailer
Check that the trailer brakes are set or the wheels are chocked so the trailer cannot roll during coupling.

Backing Under and Coupling

With the tractor lined up and prepared, back slowly under the trailer so the kingpin rises up the fifth wheel ramp into the locking jaws. The goal is a fully locked connection with the jaws closed around the shank of the kingpin. Back gently and check your position as you go.

Ease the tractor back until the kingpin engages the fifth wheel; sudden or angled backing can cause a miss or damage.
Raise the trailer slightly
The trailer should lift a little as the tractor backs under, confirming solid fifth wheel contact.
Lock the jaws on the shank
The fifth wheel jaws must close around the shank of the kingpin, not the head, for a safe coupling.
No gap between plates
There must be no space between the upper and lower fifth wheel plates; a gap signals a bad coupling that must be redone.

Connecting Air and Electrical Lines

After the kingpin is coupled, connect the service and emergency air lines and the electrical cord, then supply air to the trailer. Correct connections are critical because crossed or leaking lines can leave the trailer without brakes. Charge the system and check for leaks before testing.

Connect glad hands correctly
Attach the emergency (often red) and service (often blue) air lines to the correct couplers and never cross them.
Secure the electrical cord
Plug the light cord in firmly, latch it if equipped, and route it so it does not drag or chafe.
Supply air to the trailer
Push in the trailer air supply valve to charge the trailer and release its spring brakes.
Check for leaks
Listen and watch the gauge to confirm the air system holds pressure and the trailer brakes respond before moving.
Inspect line condition
Make sure the air lines are not cut, cracked, or worn and that they are supported so they do not tangle or rub.

Testing the Coupling

Never trust that a coupling is secure by sight alone. Two checks confirm a safe connection: the tug test and a visual look into the back of the fifth wheel. A false coupling, where the kingpin rests on top of the closed jaws, can separate on the road, so both tests are required.

Perform the tug test
With trailer brakes locked, gently pull forward in low gear; a secure coupling will not separate.
Inspect with a flashlight
Go under the trailer and confirm the locking jaws are closed around the kingpin shank with no gap between the plates.
Watch for false coupling
If the kingpin sits on top of the closed jaws it looks connected but can slip out; recouple immediately if found.
Check the safety catch
Confirm the fifth wheel release handle is in the locked position with any safety catch engaged.

Raising Landing Gear and Uncoupling

Once the coupling is confirmed, raise the landing gear fully and secure the crank handle. To uncouple, reverse the process: support the trailer on the landing gear, disconnect the lines, release the fifth wheel, and ease the tractor out. Doing these steps in order prevents a dropped trailer or damaged equipment.

Raise gear fully
Crank the landing gear all the way up and secure the handle so it cannot catch on obstacles or swing out.
Use low gear for heavy loads
Start raising loaded landing gear in the low crank gear to reduce effort and avoid injury, then switch to high.
Lower gear before uncoupling
During uncoupling, lower the landing gear until it firmly supports the trailer before releasing the fifth wheel.
Disconnect and stow lines
Set trailer brakes, disconnect the air and electrical lines, and secure them so they are not crushed or dragged.
Ease the tractor out
Pull the release handle, then move the tractor forward slowly until the fifth wheel clears the trailer, and stop.
