Safe Driving Techniques

A school bus is long, heavy, and tall, with large blind spots and a high center of gravity. Driving it safely means accounting for how it turns, backs, brakes, and handles in weather that a car would shrug off. This chapter covers turning and off-tracking, backing, antilock brakes, and driving in adverse conditions.

Turning and Off-Tracking

Because the bus is long, its rear wheels follow a tighter path than the front wheels in a turn, a phenomenon called off-tracking. Drivers must position the bus so the rear does not cut over curbs or into other lanes. Right and left turns each have a technique that accounts for the bus's length.

The rear wheels track a shorter, tighter path than the front wheels, so the rear can cut the corner.
Right turns: keep the rear near the curb
Turn slowly and keep the rear close to the curb so another vehicle cannot squeeze in on the right.
Left turns: reach the center first
Move to the center of the intersection before turning so the rear does not cut into oncoming lanes.
Do not swing wide misleadingly
Avoid swinging wide in a way that makes following drivers think you are changing lanes.

Backing Safely

Backing a school bus is one of the most dangerous maneuvers because of the large rear blind spot, and it is especially hazardous when students are present. The best practice is to avoid backing whenever possible by planning routes and stops that do not require it. When backing cannot be avoided, do it slowly with help.

A child can be directly behind the bus in the largest blind spot; keep students clear and supervised.
Use a ground guide
When you must back, use a trained lookout to watch the rear and sides and go slowly.

Antilock Braking Systems (ABS)

ABS keeps the wheels from locking up during hard braking so the driver can keep steering and avoid a skid. It does not necessarily shorten stopping distance; its value is control. Drivers must apply firm, steady pressure rather than pumping the pedal, and normal brakes remain if ABS fails.

Driving in Adverse Conditions

Rain, snow, ice, and wind all reduce a bus's traction and stability, and its height and weight make it more vulnerable than a car. The driver's tools are lower speed, more following distance, and smooth inputs. Understanding hydroplaning, rollover risk, and downgrades helps keep the bus under control.

Slow down and add space
On wet, snowy, or icy roads, reduce speed, increase following distance, and brake gently and early.
Prevent hydroplaning
Driving too fast on a wet road lets the tires ride up on water and lose traction; reduce speed to prevent it.
Respect the high center of gravity
Slow before curves and avoid sudden steering, because the tall bus can roll over in sharp maneuvers.
Watch for crosswinds
Strong winds can push the tall, flat-sided bus sideways; slow down and hold the wheel firmly on exposed roads.
Control speed on downgrades
Select a low gear before a long descent and use the brakes intermittently to avoid brake fade.
