Colorado sets strict impaired-driving limits and phases in driving privileges for new drivers to reduce crashes.
Impaired driving limits
A driver age 21 or older is guilty of DUI at a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 0.08 or higher, and can be charged with the lesser offense of DWAI (Driving While Ability Impaired) at a BAC of 0.05. Drivers under 21 face underage drinking-and-driving charges at a BAC as low as 0.02.
Implied consent and drugs
By driving in Colorado you give implied consent to a chemical test if lawfully arrested for impaired driving; refusing can lead to license revocation. Marijuana, prescription medicines, and other drugs can also impair driving and lead to a DUI charge.
Graduated Driver Licensing
New teen drivers start with an instruction permit and must log supervised practice hours before earning a license. During the first months of licensing, Colorado restricts nighttime driving and limits the number of teen passengers, and all occupants must wear seat belts.
