Rules of the Road & Right of Way
Right-of-way rules keep traffic moving safely by making clear who should proceed first at intersections and other shared spaces.
Intersections and stops
At a four-way stop, the driver who arrives and stops first goes first. When two vehicles arrive at the same time, the driver on the left yields to the driver on the right. At an uncontrolled intersection with no signs or signals, yield to any vehicle already in the intersection or approaching on your right.
Turns and roundabouts
When turning left, you must yield to oncoming traffic and to pedestrians crossing your path. In a roundabout, traffic already in the circle has the right of way, so slow down and yield before you enter, then travel counterclockwise.
Emergency vehicles
When an emergency vehicle approaches with flashing lights or a siren, pull over to the right edge of the road and stop until it has passed. Colorado's Move Over law also requires you to slow down and, when possible, move over a lane for stopped emergency and service vehicles.
