Signs, Signals & Markings
Traffic signs, lights, and pavement markings tell you the rules of the road and warn you about hazards ahead on Colorado roadways.
Sign shapes and colors
A red eight-sided (octagon) sign always means STOP, and a downward-pointing triangle means YIELD. Yellow diamond-shaped signs warn of hazards or changes in the road ahead, while white rectangular regulatory signs, such as speed limits, state laws you must obey. Orange signs mark construction and work zones.
Traffic signals
A steady red light means stop and remain stopped until it turns green. A steady yellow means the light is about to turn red, so prepare to stop. A flashing red light is treated like a stop sign, and a flashing yellow means slow down and proceed with caution.
Pavement markings
A solid yellow center line separates traffic moving in opposite directions, and you may not cross it to pass when it is solid on your side. A broken yellow line means passing is allowed when it is safe. White lines separate lanes of traffic moving in the same direction.
