Cabinetry and Millwork Fabrication

Fabrication covers milling, assembling, storing and transporting cabinets and millwork: wood movement and moisture, panel products, machine guarding, joinery, glue and fasteners, formaldehyde labeling, and protecting work in storage and transit. CSLB weights this section at 24%. For worked examples, named traps and a full practice exam at CSLB's weights, see the PrepPass C-6 Cabinet, Millwork and Finish Carpentry study guide.

Wood moves with moisture

Wood shrinks below about 30% moisture content, about twice as much tangentially as radially and very little along the grain.

Fiber saturation
Properties start to change below about 30% moisture content.

Table saw guarding

Hand-fed table saws need a hood, a spreader except for crosscutting, grooving, dadoing or rabbeting, kickback protection when ripping, and push sticks.

Fixed hood gap
No more than 1/4 inch between guard and stock.
