Two parts: a general Life, Accident and Health portion of 100 scoreable plus 10 pretest questions, and a South Dakota specific portion of 30 scoreable plus 5 pretest questions (outline effective 1 March 2024). The handbook's exam table gives the same 145 questions. Combination results are one score; neither single line is licensed unless the whole exam is passed.

The passing score is set by the South Dakota Division of Insurance and reported as 70; scores range from 0 to 100 and are not the percentage or number of questions answered correctly. Retakes: a candidate may book a retake 24 hours after the last attempt and pays the exam fee again; the handbook sets no attempt limit for this exam.
