Maine Property & Casualty Producer Examination — Exam facts
Administering bodyMaine Bureau of Insurance (Department of Professional and Financial Regulation) — exam delivered by Pearson VUE

The Bureau of Insurance has retained Pearson VUE to run the producer examinations. Since May 10, 2025 the Bureau no longer accepts registrations for online-proctored exams; exams are taken at Pearson VUE test centers. Maine gives a combined Property & Casualty exam and separate Property and Casualty exams.

Questions157 questions (140 scored, 17 unscored pretest)

This is the combined Property & Casualty exam. The handbook does not state a total; the figures are the sum of the counts the outline prints: Property General Knowledge 50 scoreable + 5 pretest, Casualty General Knowledge 50 + 5 and Maine law 40 + 7. The Property exam (General Knowledge 50 + Maine law 30 scoreable) and the Casualty exam (50 + 38) are separate.

Passing scoreScaled score of 70 on a 0–100 scale

The handbook says raw scores are converted to scaled scores from zero to 100 with a passing score of 70, and that the scaled score is neither the number nor the percentage of questions answered correctly. A numeric score is reported only to failing candidates. A candidate must wait one day before scheduling a reexamination.

Fees
  • $80 — Combined Property & Casualty examination fee (Property or Casualty alone: $55) (Pearson VUE, per attempt) Source
  • $25 — Resident producer license ($15 application fee plus $10 license fee) (Maine Bureau of Insurance, one-time) Source

The handbook says the exam fee is paid at reservation by card or voucher and is non-refundable and non-transferable except under the change and cancel policy (48 hours' notice). Maine requires no pre-licensing education: the statute's education requirement was repealed in 2007 and the Bureau tells resident applicants to take the exam first, then apply.
