Defensive habits and awareness of other road users prevent most crashes.
Following distance
Keep at least a three-second gap behind the vehicle ahead in good conditions, and increase it in rain, fog, or heavy traffic. More space gives you time to see and react to hazards.
Lane changes and blind spots
Mirrors leave blind spots, so signal, check your mirrors, and glance over your shoulder before changing lanes. Never move over until you know the lane is clear.
Sharing with others
Give motorcycles a full lane and extra following distance because they are small and stop quickly. Georgia's Move Over Law requires moving over a lane, or slowing down, for stopped emergency and utility vehicles with flashing lights.
