Speed & Driving Conditions
Posted limits are maximums for ideal conditions; safe drivers adjust to the road and weather.
Speed limits
A posted limit is the maximum allowed under ideal conditions, not a target you must always reach. Slow down when traffic, visibility, or road surface make the posted speed unsafe.
Rain and wet roads
Wet roads reduce traction and can cause hydroplaning, so reduce speed and avoid sudden steering or braking. If you begin to hydroplane, ease off the gas and steer straight until the tires regain grip.
School and work zones
Obey reduced school-zone limits during posted hours and watch for children and crossing guards. Slow down in work zones and be ready for narrowed lanes and workers near traffic.
