Alcohol, Fitness & Licensing
You must be fit to drive, and alcohol, drugs, or fatigue make driving dangerous and often illegal.
Alcohol limits
The prescribed blood alcohol limit in Hong Kong is widely cited as 50 mg per 100 ml of blood, about 0.05%. Even small amounts of alcohol impair judgement and reaction time, so the safest choice is not to drink and drive. Confirm the current figure officially.
Testing and enforcement
Police can lawfully require a breath test where drink-driving is suspected or after certain offences or collisions, and refusing a lawful test is itself an offence with serious penalties.
Fitness and probation
Do not drive when tired, ill, or affected by impairing drugs or medicines. Newly qualified drivers usually drive under stricter probationary conditions and should build experience carefully.
