Sharing the Road Safely
Pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists are far more exposed than car occupants and deserve extra care.
Protecting occupants
Drivers and passengers must wear seat belts where they are fitted. Belts greatly reduce injury in a crash, so make sure everyone is buckled up before moving off.
Pedestrians and cyclists
Give way to pedestrians at zebra crossings and never overtake a vehicle stopped for a crossing. Leave cyclists and motorcyclists plenty of space and pass only when it is safe.
Keeping a safe gap
Use the two-second rule to set a safe following distance in good conditions, and at least double the gap in rain or poor visibility. A larger gap gives you time to see and stop.
