Rules of the Road & Right of Way
Right-of-way rules make clear who proceeds first so drivers do not conflict. The law tells you when you must yield, never when to force your way.
Intersections
At an uncontrolled intersection, yield to a vehicle already there; if two arrive together, the driver on the left yields to the driver on the right. Always yield to pedestrians in a crosswalk.
Turns and red lights
You may turn right on red after a full stop and yielding, unless a sign prohibits it. Left turns on a green light require yielding to oncoming traffic and to pedestrians crossing your path.
Roundabouts and school buses
Roundabout traffic flows counterclockwise, and entering drivers yield to vehicles already circulating. On a two-lane road you must stop in both directions for a school bus with red lights flashing and stop arm out until it is withdrawn.
