Signs & Signals
Signs, signals and pavement markings tell you the rules and warn of hazards ahead. Recognizing them by shape and color lets you respond quickly and safely.
Shapes and colors
A red octagon is a STOP sign and a red-and-white triangle is a YIELD sign. Yellow diamonds warn of hazards, a five-sided pentagon marks a school zone, orange signs mark construction, and white rectangular signs state regulations you must obey.
Traffic lights
A steady red means stop, a steady yellow warns of a coming red so stop if you safely can, and a steady green lets you proceed when clear. A flashing red is treated like a STOP sign, while a flashing yellow means slow down and proceed with caution.
Pavement markings
Yellow lines separate traffic moving in opposite directions and white lines separate same-direction lanes. Double solid yellow lines prohibit passing in both directions, while a broken line allows passing when it is safe.
