Alcohol, Fitness & Licensing

The Learner's Licence is your first step, and driving fitness, sobriety, and valid documents are legal duties.

Alcohol limits

The blood alcohol limit for driving in India is widely cited as 30 mg per 100 ml of blood, about 0.03%, a low threshold. Any alcohol impairs driving, so the safest choice is not to drink and drive. Confirm the current figure officially.

The Learner's Licence

A Learner's Licence lets a new driver practise, usually accompanied by a fully licensed driver and displaying the required 'L' marking, before passing the test for a permanent licence. Minimum-age rules depend on the vehicle class.

Documents and fitness

Carry a valid driving licence for your class of vehicle and the vehicle's required documents, and produce them when lawfully asked. Do not drive when tired, ill, or affected by alcohol or drugs.
