Sharing the Road Safely

Indian roads carry many two-wheelers, pedestrians, and cyclists who are highly exposed and need extra care.

Helmets and seat belts

Two-wheeler riders and pillion riders should wear protective helmets, and car drivers and front-seat passengers should wear seat belts where fitted. These habits sharply reduce injury in a crash.

Pedestrians and vulnerable users

Give way to pedestrians at marked crossings and never overtake a vehicle stopped for a crossing. Give two-wheelers, cyclists, and animals on the road plenty of space.

Keeping a safe gap

Leave a following distance that lets you stop safely, and increase it in rain, at higher speed, or when visibility is poor, because stopping distances grow.
