Road Signs & Signals
Indian road signs fall into three main groups by shape and colour so you can read them at a glance.
Mandatory (regulatory) signs
Mandatory signs are usually circular and give orders you must obey, such as speed limits, No Entry, or compulsory directions. A red circle with a white horizontal bar means No Entry.
Cautionary (warning) signs
Cautionary signs are triangular with a red border and warn of hazards ahead, such as a sharp bend, narrow bridge, school, or pedestrian crossing, so you can slow down in time.
Informatory (guide) signs
Informatory signs are usually rectangular and give directions, distances, and facilities like hospitals or fuel. At a red octagonal STOP sign you must stop completely and give way before proceeding.
