Speed & Road Conditions

Safe speed depends on the road, weather, and traffic, not just the number on the sign.

Limits are a maximum

A posted speed limit is the most you may drive in good conditions, and limits vary by road, vehicle class, and state. Drive below the limit when conditions are poor, and always obey posted signs.

Schools and crowded areas

Slow to a low, cautious speed near schools, markets, and crowded streets, where children and pedestrians may step out suddenly. Be ready to stop at any moment.

Weather and darkness

Wet roads lengthen stopping distances, so slow down and leave a bigger gap. In fog or at night use dipped headlights, not high beam, which reflects back and dazzles oncoming drivers.
