Michigan Producer Licensing, Appointments & CE
The second part of the Michigan supplement is how a person becomes and stays a licensed personal lines producer in Michigan: the licensing agency, how appointments tie a producer to an insurer, and the continuing-education duty that keeps a license active. These state rules sit on top of the national licensing concepts in the base bank.
Getting Licensed
Resident personal lines producer licenses in Michigan are issued by the Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services (DIFS). Applicants generally must pass the required licensing examination, submit an application, and clear a background check before the license is granted. Because application steps, fees, and the exam vendor can change, confirm the current process on the DIFS website (https://www.michigan.gov/difs) rather than relying on memorized figures.
Appointments
A license alone lets a person act as a producer, but to sell for a specific insurer that company must appoint the producer, and the appointment is filed with DIFS. A producer may hold appointments from multiple insurers at the same time. Appointments (and their termination) are how the department knows which companies a producer represents.
Continuing Education and Renewal
To renew, resident producers must complete state-approved continuing education each cycle, typically including an ethics component. CE keeps producers current on law and product changes. Specific hour totals and the renewal period are set by the department and can change, so verify the current Michigan CE and renewal requirements with DIFS before your license period ends.
