Alcohol, Penalty Points & Vulnerable Road Users
Drink-driving law, penalty points and care for vulnerable users all protect lives.
Drink driving
Learner, novice and professional drivers must stay under 20mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood, while other drivers must stay under 50mg. Drugs, including some medicines, also impair driving.
Penalty points
Penalty points are added for offences such as speeding or phone use. Learner and novice permit holders are disqualified at 7 points, and fully licensed drivers at 12 points.
Vulnerable road users
Pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists and horse riders are easily injured, so give them room and time. When overtaking a cyclist, leave at least 1 metre at 50 km/h or less and 1.5 metres above that.
