The Driver & The Vehicle

Legal documents and a roadworthy vehicle are your responsibility before you drive.

Documents

To drive on a public road you need a valid licence or learner permit, motor insurance and motor tax, plus a valid NCT (roadworthiness) certificate once the car is old enough to require one.

Tyres and roadworthiness

Car tyres must have at least 1.6 mm of tread across the central three-quarters of the width, and be correctly inflated and free of damage. Lights, brakes and washers must all work.

Learner drivers

A learner permit holder must display L plates, be accompanied by a fully qualified driver at all times, and must not drive on a motorway. Novice drivers display N plates for their first two years.
