Rules of the Road & Right of Way

Ireland drives on the left, and clear right-of-way rules keep junctions safe.

Keeping left and overtaking

You must normally drive on the left and overtake on the right. Return to the left as soon as it is safe after passing, and never overtake where a continuous white line is on your side.

Junctions and turning

When turning right, yield to oncoming traffic going straight or turning left, and to pedestrians. At a roundabout, give way to traffic already on it, which approaches from your right.

Pedestrian crossings

Yield and stop for pedestrians waiting at a zebra crossing. At signalised crossings, obey the lights and watch for people still crossing when your light turns green.
