Traffic Signs & Road Markings
Irish signs and markings follow set shapes and colours so their meaning is clear at a glance.
Warning signs
Warning signs in Ireland are diamond-shaped with an amber (yellow) background and a black symbol, alerting you to a bend, junction or other hazard ahead. Motorway signs are blue and regional-road signs are green.
Regulatory signs
Regulatory signs are generally circular. A red ring or red disc gives a prohibition or order, such as no entry or a speed limit, that you must obey. A red octagon is a STOP sign requiring a full stop.
Road markings
A continuous white centre line must not be crossed or straddled to overtake, while a broken line may be crossed when it is safe. Yellow box junctions must not be entered unless your exit is clear.
