Rules of the Road & Right of Way
Right-of-way rules decide who goes first so traffic keeps moving safely. In Kansas the law tells you when to yield rather than force your way, and it gives extra protection to pedestrians and emergency vehicles.
Intersections and stops
At a four-way stop, the first to arrive goes first; if two arrive together, the driver on the left yields to the driver on the right. Traffic entering from a road that ends at a T-intersection must yield to the through road.
Turning
When turning left you must yield to oncoming traffic and to nearby pedestrians, even on a green light, until it is safe. Signal every turn and lane change well ahead of time.
Emergency and stopped vehicles
Yield to emergency vehicles by pulling to the right and stopping until they pass. Kansas also has a Move Over law: slow down and, when possible, move over a lane for stopped emergency, tow, and utility vehicles displaying warning lights.
