Sharing the Road Safely
You share Kansas roads with motorcycles, bicycles, pedestrians, large trucks, and farm equipment. Smaller and slower road users are easy to overlook, so extra care and space keep everyone safe.
Motorcycles
Motorcycles are small and can be hidden in blind spots. Give a rider a full lane and extra following distance, and always check twice before turning or changing lanes near one.
Bicycles and pedestrians
Kansas law requires passing a bicyclist at a safe distance of at least three feet. Yield to pedestrians in crosswalks, and watch for children, older adults, and people with disabilities who may move slowly.
Blind spots and large vehicles
Check your mirrors and glance over your shoulder before changing lanes. Large trucks have big blind spots and need more room to stop and turn; never cut in front of one and slow down.
